SUMMARY:HERCULES European School 2025: Neutrons and synchrotron radiation for science
DESCRIPTION:HERCULES EUROPEAN SCHOOL is a five weeks course coordinated by the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA). The school provides training for students\, postdoctoral and senior scientists from European and non-European universities and laboratories\, in the field of Neutrons\, X-ray Synchrotron Radiation\, and Free Electron Laser for condensed matter studies (Biology\, Chemistry\, Physics\, Materials Science\, Geosciences\, Industrial applications). Neutron and X-ray science is integrated with complementary techniques like (but not only) optical and electron microscopy\, NMR\, optical spectroscopy. \nIt includes lectures\, practicals\, tutorials\, and visits of Large Facilities: ALBA in Barcelona\, KIT in Karlsruhe\, Petra III and European XFEL in Hamburg\, Elettra and FERMI in Trieste\, ESRF and ILL in Grenoble\, SOLEIL in Paris-Saclay\, and PSI in Villigen.\nThe language of the course is English.\nSee the general programme for more information. \n⭐️ Join the 2025 HERCULES European School! SUMMARY:Quasielastic neutron scattering and an example of oxide ion diffusion in a solid electrolyte
DESCRIPTION:Zoom webinar | Replay on Youtube\n Bettina Schwaighofer\,  \nInstitut Laue-Langevin (ILL) \nQuasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) is a powerful technique for probing atomic and molecular motion on nanosecond to picosecond timescales. In many energy materials\, for example batteries and fuel cells\, understanding ionic migration and conduction pathways is crucial for optimising performance. QENS can provide a unique insight into both local and long-range diffusion\, with length- and time-scales comparable to molecular dynamics simulations. This complementarity helps interpret experimental data and validate computational models. This talk will introduce QENS and present a case study demonstrating how combining QENS with simulations can reveal key details of oxide ion diffusion in a solid electrolyte.
